Syracuse traces its roots back to the 1870s, when settlers like David Cook and Joseph Bodily began working the land near the Great Salt Lake under the Homestead Act. Water was scarce at first, but the extension of the Hooper Canal in 1884 changed everything, allowing homesteads to take hold near the lakeshore and turning the area into productive farmland for hay, grain, and eventually fruit orchards.

The city takes its name from a salt maker named William Galbraith, who printed “Syracuse” on his salt bags after a company he knew of in Syracuse, New York.
